North Texas Daily digital media audit

Our group's working guide. Each section follows the assignment in order, shows the evidence we already have, and lists what's still missing. Your analysis gets written in your own words in the shared Google Doc.

Ground rules

  1. Type everything into the Google Doc. No pasting text blocks from anywhere, including this page. The professor checks Version History, and a name without real contributions gets a zero.
  2. Re-check every number yourself. The figures here were collected September 15 to 18. Numbers change, so record what you see and the date you saw it.
  3. Screenshot as you go. Name each file with the platform and date, for example instagram-reels-2026-09-27.png, and drop it in the Doc.
  4. Evidence before opinion. Every claim in our paper should point to a number, a screenshot, or a quote. The SWOT especially has to come from our findings, not assumptions.
  5. Write one recommendation from your own section. Five people, five recommendations, which meets the minimum.

Selection of a media company

What the assignment asks

  • One media organization with an active digital footprint and enough activity for a full audit.

What we already know

ItemDetail
OrganizationThe North Texas Daily, student newspaper of the University of North Texas
HistoryServing UNT and Denton since 1916
RecognitionMultiple National Pacemaker Awards (verify the count with the Associated Collegiate Press)
Platformsntdaily.com, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Linktree

Questions to answer in your own words

  • Why is this a strong choice for a digital audit?
  • Who is its audience: students, faculty, Denton residents, alumni?
  • Which platforms does it actively use today, and which has it abandoned?

Website evaluation

Lauren

What the assignment asks

  • Design, layout, and ease of navigation
  • Brand clarity and messaging
  • Quality of content
  • Accessibility, such as captions and readability
  • User experience: intuitive, engaging, or confusing?
  • For each: how it affects audience trust and digital credibility

This is our biggest open section. The early research never read ntdaily.com, so almost everything here comes from Lauren browsing it by hand.

What we already know

  • The site runs on BLOX CMS, a platform many newspapers use.
  • Its robots.txt file blocks about thirty AI bots, including the ones that feature publishers in AI search answers. It matches BLOX's default settings, so it may be accidental. This can affect how easily people find NT Daily stories.

What to collect

  • Screenshots of the homepage, one article page, and the menu, on both desktop and phone
  • How many clicks it takes to find the newest story, the sports section, and the contact page
  • Whether the search bar works and returns useful results
  • Pop-ups, ads, or paywalls that interrupt reading
  • Text size, color contrast, image alt text, and captions on any video
  • Whether social icons and a newsletter signup appear in the header or footer

Questions to answer in your own words

  • Could a first-time visitor tell within five seconds what this site is and who runs it?
  • Does it look and feel credible compared with a local TV station site?
  • Where did you get stuck or confused?
  • Who might struggle to use it, such as someone on a phone or with low vision?

Social media evaluation

Emma

What the assignment asks, for two platforms where the organization is most active

  • Frequency and consistency of posts
  • Tone, messaging, and brand voice
  • Engagement metrics: likes, shares, comments, views
  • Audience feedback and comments
  • Platform strengths and weaknesses
  • How a media manager could use this for staffing, content priorities, and strategy

The two most active platforms are Instagram (posting as recently as September 17) and Facebook (the largest following). YouTube and TikTok data belong in Section 4 and the SWOT.

Instagram: what we already know

MetricValue
Followers7,450
Total posts5,437
Views, last 5 Reels1,243, 1,571, 2,295, 3,373, 1,057 (average about 1,900)
Likes, last 5 static posts63, 33, 40, 75, 106
Caption styleFull caption, then "read more at the link in bio"
Bio"The official independent newspaper of the University of North Texas"

Careful: Reels show views, but static posts only show likes. Those are different measurements, so don't compare them directly.

Facebook: what we already know

MetricValue
FollowersAbout 13,000
Bio"Official newspaper of UNT"
Posting frequency, engagement, commentsNot collected yet

What to collect on both platforms

  • The last 10 to 15 posts: date, format (Reel, photo, carousel, link), and likes, comments, shares, or views
  • How many posts in the last 30 days, and whether there are long gaps
  • The top three posts by engagement and what they have in common
  • A sample of real comments: questions, praise, complaints, and whether NT Daily replies

Questions to answer in your own words

  • Does the voice sound like students, a professional newsroom, or a mix?
  • Which format clearly wins, and how should that shape staffing?
  • What does each platform do well that the other doesn't?

Cross-platform integration

Brandyn

What the assignment asks

  • How the website connects to social media channels
  • How content is cross-promoted across website and social
  • Consistency of calls to action, such as subscribe or sign up
  • Brand voice across the whole digital landscape
  • Why cross-platform alignment matters to media managers

Our strongest finding: short video travels, long-form doesn't

  • Same week on YouTube: a 2:54 protest clip drew 1,100 views; a 52-minute podcast drew 32.
  • Eight short news clips account for about 64% of all YouTube views the channel has ever earned (126 videos).
  • Sixteen podcast episodes total about 15 hours and 1,201 views. Eight news clips total about 31 minutes and 27,229 views.
  • TikTok's ten posts averaged about 2,600 views on a 104-follower account. The account has been inactive since August 2022.

The Linktree hub

  • Four links total. Social icons point to Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube. No TikTok and no Threads.
  • One link still advertises a "Friday May 23" summer orientation, which was May 2025.
  • No link points to an actual story.
  • TikTok has no link in its bio at all.

Calls to action

YouTube has 42,629 lifetime views but only 184 subscribers, which suggests viewers are rarely asked to subscribe. Instagram captions send readers to the link in bio.

Brand voice: one word, used once

PlatformHow NT Daily describes itselfSays "independent"?
Instagram"The official independent newspaper of the University of North Texas"Yes
TikTok"The North Texas Daily, serving UNT and Denton since 1916."No
YouTube"the official newspaper of the University of North Texas"No
Linktree"Serving the University of North Texas & Denton since 1916"No
Facebook"official newspaper of UNT"No

Still to check

  • Which social platforms ntdaily.com links to (coordinate with Lauren)
  • Whether the website has a newsletter signup and where
  • Whether stories on the site get promoted on social, and how quickly

SWOT analysis

Elora

What the assignment asks

  • At least three strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats
  • How a media manager could use them to make strategic changes
  • Based on evidence from the audit, not assumptions

Below is the evidence pool so far. Pick the strongest items, confirm them, and add what Lauren and Emma find. Every item should trace back to a number or screenshot in the Doc.

Strengths

  • Award-winning journalism
  • Short news video reaches thousands
  • Instagram Reels average about 1,900 views
  • A brand more than 100 years old

Weaknesses

  • TikTok abandoned since 2022
  • Long podcasts draw very few views
  • Outdated Linktree link, missing platforms
  • "Independent" used on one platform out of five
  • Few subscribe prompts

Opportunities

  • Restart short vertical video
  • Grow a newsletter to keep readers over summer
  • Fix the hub with live story links
  • Show up in AI search answers

Threats

  • UNT budget cuts affecting its home college (verify with Texas Tribune reporting)
  • Competition from local TV and online outlets
  • Blocked AI search bots limit discovery
  • Student staff turnover each year

Items without a number yet, like staff turnover and competition, need a source before they go in the final paper.

Recommendations

Everyone

What the assignment asks

  • At least five recommendations
  • Realistic, data driven, and written in a professional tone for a media manager

Use this structure for yours

  1. The recommendation in one clear sentence
  2. The evidence from your section that supports it
  3. The first step a media manager would take
  4. How to measure it, such as views, followers, or signups

Where each person's recommendation can come from

MemberSource area
LaurenWebsite navigation, accessibility, or newsletter placement
EmmaWhich formats and posting schedule to prioritize on Instagram and Facebook
EloraThe biggest opportunity or threat from the SWOT
